Normally you would use a program like Outlook on your computer to access your email. Sometimes, however, you may need to read your email from a different computer.
Most email services offer a webmail feature, which means you can use a web browser on any computer to access your email directly from the server, without having to setup or use Outlook or another email program.
To access your Web Mail, you usually access it in one of these ways:
- webmail.mydomain.com
- email.mydomain.com
Some things to consider:
- You will have to use your email username and password to get access to your email. It's a good idea to try your web mail service before you leave town, just to make sure you've got everything you need to get your email on the road.
- Webmail is like a window into the email server, letting you see your email that is sitting on the server. If your regular computer has already taken the messages off the server and onto your computer, they may not be on the server anymore to view using the webmail feature.
- Make sure you turn your main computer off before you leave, otherwise it may check for email automatically every 15 minutes. Email that is received into Outlook is usually removed from the server immediately after it's been received, so it won't be available to view from the webmail. In that case you won't be able to read your email until you get back to your computer.
- Email that you send on the road will usually NOT be in your Outlook program when you return.
