BASIC DEFINITIONS

 
LAN - Local Area Network – one physical location
WAN - Wide Area Network – multiple locations
WLAN - Wireless Local Area Network – one physical location, using wireless
 
Wi-Fi - Wireless Fidelity - Easy name meaning “standard wireless access”
 
WAP - Wireless Access Point – the main station/antenna that you connect to
WEP - Wired Equivalent Privacy – wireless encryption
WPA - Wi-Fi Protected Access - another wireless encryption
WPA-PSK - Wi-Fi Protected Access with Pre-Shared Key - another wireless encryption
RADIUS - yet another form of wireless encryption
 
HotSpot - A café or restaurant that offers a WAP for you to use
HotSpot™ - A HotSpot available at Starbuck’s etc. - paid subscription from Tmobile
SSID - Service Set Identifier – the public name of a wireless network
 
A - 802.11a– the first standard for wireless networks
B - 802.11b– the next standard for wireless networks – Speed = 11Mbs
